Lebanon was created by the League of Nations in 1922 but it remained a French protectorate for many years. Lebanon has a population of approximately 4 million people which are divided as follows: 59.7 % are muslims who are in turn divided into Shi'a, Sunni, Druze, Isma'ilite Alawite or Nussayr; 39% are christians, divided as follows:-Maronite Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Melkite Catholic, Armenian Orthodox, Syrian Catholic, Armenian Catholic, Syrian Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Assyrian Copt and Protestant. 1.3% belong a number of sects. It has a central government but that government has always been weak.

In April 13 1975 a civil war started and all the above groups were now represented by three waring movements All were fighting and killing each other. The war ended 16 years and seven months later, namely on October 13th,1990 during which time 100,000 people were killed, 100,000 were injured and about 900, 000 were left homeless as their homes were either dispossessed or destroyed. 250,000 left the country and immigrated to a number of countries in the western world.

The PLO occupied the Southern part of Lebanon and was using its position to attack Israel with long range weapons. In 1978 37 Isrealis were killed by these weapons. Israel decided to attack the PLO and invaded Lebanon. Its aim was to dislodge the PLO, protect some Christian groups and the Shi'a muslims. But the real invasion began in 1980 and this time Israel dislodged the PLO and occupied the southern border area of Lebanon and remained there until 2000.

The Syrian government sent over 40,00 troops to Lebanon in 1975 and immediately occupied the entire Bekaa Valley. Eventually Syria controlled the economy and the politics of Lebanon until 2005.

The Shi'a population was tired of being under privileged and formed Hizballah, The Party of God, to protect the Shi'as from the Sunnis and some Christian groups and to rid Lebanon of Israeli occupation. Hisballah behaved as a social welfare group providing benefits to the Shi'a population such as schools, hospitals and also as a terrorist army setting up a rogue state in Southern Lebanon and did not feel that it was bound by the constitution Lebanon nor by the central government.

It was responsible for the bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beruit killing 63 people of which 17 were Americans. In 1983 it sent suicide bombers carrying 12,000 tons of TNT and blew up the marine barracks at Beruit Airport, whereby 241 U.S servicemen were killed . President Reagan wanted to use force against Hisballah but he was dissuaded by Casper Weinberger, the Secretary of Defence. who felt that the arab nations would disaprove of any attack on Hisballah. Nothing was done and eventually the U.S. withdrew its troops from Lebanon and the 241 servicemen died in vain.

In 2000, the western countries convinced the Israeli government of Ehud Barak to withdraw from Lebanon promising Israel it would have peace with Hisballah. Israel promised to withdraw if Hisballah withdrew from the southern part of Lebanon. Israel did withdraw and the U.N Security Council passed resolution 1559 ordering Hisballah to withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon. Hisballah never complied with this resolution.

Hisballah remained in Soutern Lebanon and received Arms from Syria and Iran which it used to continuously attack northern towns in Israel destroying houses and wounding its inhabitants.
Hasan Nasrallah, the leader of Hisballah, stated the following:-"The State of Israel was established on the basis of occupation and there is no legitimate State of Israel. Israel remains a foreign body and is not a candidate for peace within the region". Hisballah, therefore, fails to abide by Security Council resolutions 242 ans 338 which gave Israel the right to exist.

Hisballah was responsible for some of the suicide bombings in Israel killing innocent civilians. The basis for the suicide bombing was shear hatred of the Israel and the Jewish People. Finally, Hisballah forces crossed into Israel, attacked 10 Israeli soldiers, killing 8 of them and capturing
2 of them. The excuse given was the two hostages were taken in order to effect a prisoner exchange. If Hisballah really wanted a prisoner exhange, why did it not capture all ten of the Israeli soldiers, instead of killing 8?

Israel considered this an act of war. Many Arab States disagreed with the actions of Hisballah.
Israel wanted the unconditional return of the two soldiers . Hisballah refused. Israel knew that Hisballah hid its armed emplacements within the population of southern Lebanon. Israel dropped leaflets upon that population advising it to leave because it was going to be attacked. Some ignored the warnings . Israel bombed the armed emplacements of Hisballah and 300 civilians were killed. Hisballah replied by firing missiles into Haifa, a city were Israelis, both arabs and Jews get along quite well and into other northern Israeli towns killing civilians.

The missile and other armaments are supplied to Hisballah by Syria and Iran. both of whom do not supply any armaments to the the legitimate Lebanese Armed forces. Bashar Al Assad the president of Syria claims that Hisballah is merely protecting Lebanon and is a peace loving group. It still does not recognize the legitimacy of Israel who it claims is merely an illegal occupier of land. Iran has even a stranger president. MAHMOUD ALIMADINEJAD. referred to Israel as follows:- "The occupying regime which should be wiped off the pages of time. It is a disgraceful stain on the Islamic world".

The Iranian president has a very interesting background. After the fall of the Shah. there was a crackdown on Universities. Alimadinejad played a role in purging dissident lecturers and students, many of whom were arrested and executed. In the 80's he worked in the internal security of Iran and earned notoriety as a ruthless interrogator and torturer. It is alleged on the website of former Iranian President Khatami, that ALIMADINEJAD worked as an executioner in the notorous Evin Prison, where thousands of political prisoners were executed.

In short, Nasan Nasrallah, Bashar Al Assad, and Mahmoud Alimadinejad are nothing more than little Hitlers intent on destroying Israel and its Jewish Population. The Allies did not negociate with Hitler. It took 6 years but eventually Hitler and the Third Reich were destroyed and Germany became a democracy. Consequently Hisballah and the three little Hitlers should also be destroyed.

I am somewhat dismayed by some columnists who claim that Israel is over reacting and there should be a negociated peaceful settlement. How do you settle with people who are bent on destroying you? Neville Chamberlain, who as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, signed a peace treaty with Hitler. You still see clips of the newsreel showing Chamberlain disembarking from an airplane, waving a white paper and claiming that there was peace. Unfortunately he paid no attention to the fact that Jews, Slavs, gays and the mentally ill were being put to death by Hitler. Appeasement did not work. Hitler started his blittskreig, and nearly bombed England out of existance. The English people were tough and survived, but Chamberlain's political career laid in ruins and was not heard from again.

Did the Allies over react when they bombed Germany and killed many Civilians? Did Harry Truman over react when he dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.? I think not because the enemy was destroyed and World War 11 ended sucessfully for the allies.
